The Athletic Association of Xanthi Runners “Xanthi Runners” and the A.P.S. Diomedes Xanthi in collaboration with the Municipality of Xanthi, the Municipality of Avdira and the Region of Eastern Macedonia – Thrace announce the 10th Democritus Half Marathon Road Race of Xanthi and at the same time the 5,000m City Race and the children’s 1,000m race.

The race will be held according to the following conditions:

  1. Name: Democritus Half Marathon.
  2. Date: Sunday, 24 November 2024
  3. Route distance: 21,097.5 meters (according to A.I.M.S certification)
  4. Place: Xanthi
  5. Start time:

Sunday 24-11-2024, 10:30 – Half Marathon Road Race
Sunday 24-11-2024, 10:35 – City Race 5000 m.
Sunday 24-11-2024, 13:00 – Children’s Race 1000m.

  1. Start and Finish: central square of Xanthi.
  2. Route:
  • Half marathon: A circular course will be followed. Specifically: Square, B. Kon/nou, B. Sofias, Evrou, Katsoni, E.O. Xanthi-Jasmou, Kimmeria, Pigadia, E.O. Komotini-Xanthi, Xanthi Ring Road, E.O. Kavala – Xanthi, 28 October, square. Throughout the race there will be traffic regulation, as well as medical care from the Department of Samaritan Rescuers and Lifeguards of the Regional Department of the Red Cross of Xanthi.
  • 5000m city race: A circular course will be followed. Specifically: Square, N. Kon/nou, N. Sofias, Stratou Avenue, Lefkippou, Dramas, 28th of October, square.
  • 1000m Children’s Race: There will be a circular course. Specifically: Square, Michael Karaoli, Kouyoumtzoglou, Brokoumi, 28th of October, square.

  1. Awards: The award ceremony will take place at 1:30 p.m.
  2. Eligibility:
  • Half-marathon: The Half-marathon road race is an open public race and any male and female athlete who is at least 18 years old is eligible to participate.
  • 5000m city race: All male and female athletes born until 2010 are eligible to participate.
  • 1000m Children’s Race: Students who attend Primary school or are of a similar age can participate. Students must be accompanied by a parent or other adult before and after the end of the race.
  1. Awards, Prizes:
  • Half marathon: The first three (3) men and the first three women of the general classification are declared winners.

– Cups will be awarded to the winners of the first place.
– Medals and diplomas will be awarded to the winners of the first, second and third place.
-All athletes who finish the race will be awarded a commemorative participation certificate (electronically) and a commemorative embossed medal of the race.

Largest team award
There will be an award for the largest participating team on behalf of the Clubs-Teams of runners. The winner will result from the participants’ registrations both for the Half Marathon and the 5km race. Athletes who register with a Club or Team after the regular registration period (Wednesday, 15 November 2023) will not be included in the results for largest team.

-The winners of the first three places of the general classification of men and women will not participate in the awards of the age categories.

5000m city race: The first three (3) men and the first three women of the general classification are declared winners.

– Cups will be awarded to the winners of the first place.
– Medals will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners.
– There will also be a category for the ones under 18 years of age (born until 2004) in which the first three male athletes and the first three female athletes will be awarded a prize.
Children’s Race 1000m: The first three (3) boys and the first three girls of the general classification are declared winners.
– Cups will be awarded to the winners of the first place.
– Medals will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners.
– All athletes who finish the race will be given a commemorative medal.

  1. Race record

Half marathon: The first winner of the male category and the first winner of the female category, in case they have achieved a performance better than the race record, will be awarded cash prizes of 200 euros for the male category and 100 euros for the female category.

Registrations are made via the race’s website at: http://www.democritushalfmarathon.gr and terminated on Tuesday, 12 November 2024. Athletes and clubs can register with individual or group registration using the corresponding online form.

Children’s race 1000m
Registrations will take place at the Central Square at a special designated area in front of the entrance of the City Hall. The race office will be open for the runners on Saturday, 24-11-2024 from 10:00 until 19:00 and on Sunday, 24-11-2024 from 8:30 until 12:30. Upon registration, they will receive the race number that must be attached on their chest during the race. The children’s participation can be accepted only if, during  registration, the parent or guardian signs the consent form for the eligibility of the child-athlete. Otherwise, the participation will not be eligible.

  1. Payment methods: The payment of the participation fee can be carried out in the following methods:

Online by credit or debit card.
Online by PayPal.

  1. Medical care: The medical care of the race is carried out by volunteer doctors as well as the Department of Samaritan Rescuers and Lifeguards of the Regional Department of the Red Cross of Xanthi throughout the whole duration of the race and the race route.

Organizers bear no responsibility for any issue, during the race, related to the participants’ HEALTH due to the lack of complete pre-race medical check. It is recommended that all participants have recently gone through a full range medical examination before the event.

The Organizers will not request any medical certification given that all runners participate in the event exclusively on their own responsibility and the underage on their parents’ responsibility.

  1. Runners pick-up

A vehicle of the organization with volunteers will follow the last runners, so as to pick up the athletes that quit the race. Those who quit but are in no need of medical care can wait at a support station until a vehicle by the organization returns them to the finish.

  1. Support stations

Half-marathon: Throughout the course, there will be support stations at the 5th km, the 10th, the 15th, the 18th and at the finish.

City race 5000m: There will be a support station at the 3rd km and at the finish.

ATTENTION: All runners are kindly requested to leave any bottles and cups at the right side of the road, so as to facilitate their collection before taken to recycling.

  1. Distance signs: Along the route there will be distance signs per kilometre.

19: Finishing time limit:

Half-marathon: Participants must finish the race within 2.5 hours. After this time limit, the organizers will have to permit the vehicles’ regular circulation as well as to close the support stations.

City race 5000m: There is no time limitation regarding the finishing of the participants.

  1. Electronic timing and results: The electronic timing will be carried out by a timing company. At the 10th km (for the Half-Marathon) there will be a timing mat for an intermediate recording of the passage of the runners from it. it. For this reason runners should wear the timing chip they receive along with their entry number from the race office.

Attention: Your time will not be recorded and you will not be included in the results if you do not have the timing chip attached on you and you do not go over the timing mats.

  1. Race kit distribution: From the central square of Xanthi at a specially designated area in front of the entrance of the City Hall. The race office will be open for the runners on Saturday, 24-11-2024 from 10:00 until 18:00 and on Sunday, 24-11-2024 from 8:30 until 9:30.
  2. Personal belongings:

Runners will leave and take their personal belongings at the start. All athletes are kindly requested not to have any valuables in their bags. The organizers bear no responsibility for any kind of loss.

  1. General terms of participation

In case of the race cancellation after the government’s decision due to possible health protective measures, there will be a full refund to every runner within 60 days from the day of the decision.  There will also be a full refund in the case of limitation of the number of participants after the government’s decision, as far as the banned participants are concerned, who will be determined according to registration priority.

In case of extreme conditions or any other event, the organizing committee of the race is entitled to postpone the start or to cancel the race depending on the ongoing conditions without any refund.

The participants in the Democritus Half-Marathon of Xanthi shall know and be fully aware of the risks that are entailed in participating in the race, as far as possible injuries or health problems are concerned.

Each runner participates in the race at their own free will.

Each runner participates in the race at their own risk and bears fully responsibility regarding his/her physical fitness and ability to participate.

The Athletic Association of Xanthi Runners, the A.P.S. Diomedes Xanthi and the organizing committee of the race bear no responsibility in case of an accident, damage or any other injury that may occur to any participant of the race or to any spectator of the race.

The bib number is personal and it is prohibited to be given or used by another runner.

The personal details which are given upon registration by the participants are considered correct.

Participants agree that their personal data can be saved and used for reasons that refer to the completion of the race, such as the timing, the list of results as well as their publishing on the Internet.

The runners participating in the races agree to the use of their photo taken before, during or after the race by the organizers, the sponsors or other partners of the organization for reasons of publicity and future promotion of the organization, without any right to be fully or partly compensated for this reason.

The organizing committee reserves the right to alter the articles of the announcement as part of their adaptation according to recent directions by the General Secretariat for Sport until the date of the race.
